The means of communication help us to send our messages and ideas from one place to another. Our world is huge and sending a message e.g. from America to Asia a century ago was nearly impossible or took a lot of time.

The History of Means of Communication

People could communicate before they invented the alphabet. People drew pictures on the walls when they couldn’t read and write. People «spoke» with the help of hands. (Nowadays some people communicate with their hands too.) People used fire and smoke signals to send important information.

Books… Books – a lot of information in them …

People invented the post in the 19th century. The English invented the stamp - “the Penny Black”. Samuel Morse invented telegraph - a communication system which transmits signals.

Newspapers are the oldest kind of communication but we can say that they are today quite old-fashioned.

There are 3 main kinds of newspaper:

Broad sheets (a quality newspaper)

  1.  very big pages, hardly any colour pages, not too much photos, more difficult language, it focuses on some topic – more details and facts, longer articles, more tidy-looking, nearly about everything (policy, culture, money...)
  2.  people who read it are businessmen, people with higher education, people who don’t like blabs
  3.  The Independent, The Daily Telegraph

  1.  smaller pages, dramatic headlines, lots of colour pages, plenty of photos, short articles, human interests stories and sensations, simple language, many blabs
  2.  they more popular than broad sheets, in GB the circulation is about 3 mil per day, it is read by all society ranks
  3.  The Sun, The Mirror

Special interests magazines

  1.  they are issued weekly or monthly, they intent on special things (gardening, computers, food...)
  2.  they are much more expensive than daily newspapers but they are printed in better paper, you should be more educated in a special things to understand it

Telephone. In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell, a Scotsman invented the telephone. Now the Bell Telephone Company is the largest company in the world.

A mobile phone is perhaps the most popular means of communication.  While some people think that a mobile telephone can be harmful, I cannot imagine my life without it.

In my opinion, we should not stop to use mobiles because they are very convenient. To begin with, they are small enough to fit into our pockets so we can easily take them everywhere and always stay in touch. Besides, they allow us not only phone, but to send messages, which is very cheap. What is more, with new multimedia mobiles, we can log on to the Internet, pay for things, play games, interact with TV programmes, take photos and send them to friends.

However, some people are afraid that radiation from mobiles can lead to cancer. Another concern is that teenagers are becoming addicted to their mobiles.

Television (TV) is a telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images.

As technology becomes more and more a part of our lives, there are seemingly ever-increasing methods of communicating instantaneously with friends, family, business partners and strangers around the world.

Kinds of programmes: children’s, current affairs, discussion, pop music, gardening, arts, natural, history, film review, customer affairs, language-learning, human interest, fashion, light entertainment, variety; documentaries, the news (is), soap operas, quiz shows, game shows, breakfast TV, costume dramas, the National Lottery draw, film, action series, weather forecast, sci-fi series...

Computers/ Internet can help you keep in touch with your friends : chatting, talking, writing and receiving e-mails. It is like a typewriter and an address book. It is a brilliant source of information.

Social Networking

Starting with college students, the idea of social networking has exploded in the last decade, now being used for business as well as personal purposes. Facebook, MySpace and Twitter offer a multitude of features, combining all of the above into a single personal profile one can set up to showcase themselves, their business or their ideas. The primary idea is for networking with friends and family, but many of these sites can now be used for numerous purposes.

Skype is a downloadable software that enables users to make free phone calls and send messages via the Internet. The service also offers video phone calling, allowing users to watch each other in real time while they speak.

As for me… Mobile and computer are the fastest and useful means of communication. I think mobile telephone is a great invention in the world. I need a mobile to get in touch with my friends and parents, send and receive messages from them. I don’t read newspapers very oftеn. I listen to the radio and watch TV quite often. I like sitcoms, good comedies with crazy or black humour. But I think the Internet is the best way of communication. There is a lot of information there and you can also watch TV through Internet or listen to radio and you can read newspapers or magazines too.

2.     Is there any means of communication you can’t live without? Why (not)?

I wouldn’t say – I can’t live without any means of communication. To tell you the truth we should have rest from any form of communication. But I can’t imagine my everyday life without the Internet.

The Internet is a great source of information and entertainment for many people. It has made possible new forms of social interaction and has become a major source of leisure.

Thanks to it I have got an opportunity to access news, documents, images, sounds, video and games, to make friends, to book tickets and to purchase different things online. There are a lot of different sites for students, gardeners, businessmen, engineers, for people who are fond of music, cinema, theatre, sports and even for disabled people. What is more, the Internet has revolutionized the way people communicate. Sending electronic text messages is much faster and easier than writing letters. People use e-mail to stay in touch with friends worldwide.

3.     What questions will you ask the participants of Dom 2, a TV reality show?

Frankly speaking, I wouldn’t like to talk to them at all. The only question may be:

-         What makes you take part in this kind of a TV show?

4.     I’d like to watch an interesting programme on TV. What can you advise me?

First of all, I would ask about your preferences and interests. Sometimes people watch TV just to relax. In this case my advice may be very different. So, I personally would recommend you to watch any programmes on Discovery Channel or on Viasat History Channel. If you’ve got a pet you would enjoy watching special programmes about cats and dogs on Animal Planet Channel. If you want to listen to hot discussions, visit RTVI Channel and choose anything to your taste.

Also there are many programmes about education and culture. There are programmes on wide range of subjects — from physics and literature to cooking and yoga. Public TV also broadcasts plays, ballets, symphonies as well as programs about art and history. So you’ve got a great choice.

5.     Many people say that newspapers and radio are not as popular as TV and very soon they will lose their importance. What is your point of view?

Maybe. But I don’t think they will lose their importance. Probably they will change the forms. Many newspapers will be transformed into electronic versions on the Internet. As for radio, it has already lost its importance in its initial way of existence. Nowadays we can listen to the radio through the Internet.
